IOWA Board meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month via teleconference. IOWA members are welcome to attend. Contact the IOWA President prior to the meeting for call-in details.



ABA Rule of Law Initiative — Legal Specialists

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative is currently recruiting Legal Specialists on various topics for ongoing and future programs in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Recruitment is for short- and long-term positions in countries throughout the region, both paid and volunteer positions.

Potential duties may include one or more of the following: trainings of attorneys, judges, police and other justice sector operators in oral trial skills, due process, and the application of human rights standards; design of training curricula for justice sector operators including prosecutors, defense attorneys, and police; design of law school curricula; and institutional strengthening to bar associations and law schools.

Applicants must have a law degree and relevant legal experience, as well as professional fluency in Spanish and English.

The Union Block
Mount Pleasant

The Union Block, one of Mount Pleasant's historic buildings, is in jeopardy. Local leaders have come together to preserve and renew this historic, structurally sound building with a restoration plan. Arabella (Belle) Babb MansfieldOf special significance to IOWA, during the 1860s the third floor served as a temporary court of law. In 1869, Arabella (Belle) Babb Mansfield took the bar exam there to become the United States' first certified female attorney. Also, during the 1870s and 1880s, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Henry Clay Dean, Bronson Alcott, P.T. Barnum, and Anna Dickinson spoke there.
